Zi Hai Guo Claypot Rice Shredded Pork with Garlic Sauce

This is the Zi Hai Guo Claypot Rice Shredded Pork with Garlic Sauce, a self-heating meal kit designed to replicate the flavour profile of traditional claypot rice. This variety featured yú xiāng ròu sī, a Sichuan-style shredded pork in garlic sauce.

Each unit included a plastic outer bowl with a lid, an inner aluminium tray, and individually sealed components: dehydrated rice, filtered water, wet toppings (shredded pork, garlic shoots, and carrots), a seasoning sauce sachet, and a self-heating element.

To prepare, all ingredients except the seasoning sauces were assembled in the aluminium tray. The self-heating element was placed in the plastic base and activated by adding cold tap water. The tray was then set atop the heater and covered with the lid. Steam began venting within minutes, and after approximately 15 minutes, the lid was removed and the seasoning sauce stirred through before serving.

On tasting, the rice was evenly cooked with distinct grains—neither mushy nor dry. While it lacked the crispy base characteristic of claypots cooked over direct flame, the texture remained pleasant. The garlic shoots and carrots retained a gentle crunch and added a subtle sweetness, which balanced the savoury soy-based sauce. The heat was mild and well-integrated, enhancing the dish without overwhelming it.

However, the shredded pork lacked flavour definition and structural integrity. It was soft to the point of being texturally indistinct, contributing little beyond body to the sauce. As a result, the vegetables became the primary source of texture, leaving the protein component somewhat underwhelming.

Overall, while the dish was flavourful and the sauce well-balanced, it did not deliver the same textural harmony as other variants in the series.
