Lamb Weston first came to our attention through a YouTube video featuring three chefs reviewing frozen chips in the United States, where the brand consistently ranked at the top. While these potato cakes were manufactured in Australia for Lamb Weston, we were curious to see if their quality and flavour matched their American counterpart.
Each bag contained 10 potato cakes, measuring approximately 8–9 cm in diameter and 1 cm in thickness, with the potato filling making up about two-thirds of the total height.
For cooking, we opted for the air fryer method: 1) preheat to 200°C, 2) cook for 10 minutes on one side, 3) flip and cook for another 9 minutes. The result was slightly underdone in the centre, so an additional minute on both sides would have been ideal for a fully golden brown and evenly cooked finish.
As promised, the potato cakes had a crunchy, crisp exterior. The batter was well-seasoned, offering a balanced savoury flavour that complemented the soft, creamy potato interior. The ratio of batter to potato was just right, providing a satisfying bite.
These potato cakes lived up to the expectations set by their American counterpart and were on par with the best potato cakes from local fish and chip shops. While the price was steep ($9.50 on sale, usually $11.50 for 10 pieces), they still worked out to be more cost-effective than purchasing from a takeaway shop—without compromising on flavour. Given their quality, they are well worth buying when craving potato cakes at home.
