Umetsubo Momiji Manjū Caramel

This is the Umetsubo Momiji Manjū Caramel, a meibutsu from Miyajima in Hiroshima Prefecture. It was filled with caramel-flavoured white bean paste.

Each piece was shaped like a maple leaf, measuring approximately 6 × 5 × 2 cm at its widest and thickest points. The exterior was evenly golden brown, with a mild caramel aroma rising from the cake.

On tasting, the surface carried slight moisture, similar to lightly syrup-soaked sponge, before giving way to a fine-crumbed cake that appeared dense but proved light and softly springy. The sponge resembled a compact vanilla cake, with enough structure to hold the filling without feeling heavy. The centre consisted of a thick, dense white bean paste flavoured with caramel. Its texture was cohesive and substantial, contrasting clearly with the lighter crumb of the cake. The caramel flavour was controlled and relatively refined, avoiding excessive sweetness. It carried a faint salted dairy quality reminiscent of dulce de leche, supported by the natural body of the bean paste. The ratio of filling to cake felt balanced.

Overall, this was a technically well-executed caramel momiji manjū with clear textural contrast, though the flavour profile itself was comparatively conventional.

This Umetsubo Momiji Manjū Caramel contained 35 g. It was produced in Japan and purchased in Sydney, Australia in 2026.
