We love our Japanese jellies and this ‘bulk’ pack this here is Orihiro Purunto Konnyaku Jelly Strawberry + Melon. The jellies are konjac-based, so have that addictive bounce and resistance.
The Strawberry Jelly comes in a pink-red coloured pouch and contained 13% fruit juice (a mix of strawberry and apple). The strawberries used are Amaou strawberries, which are famous for their red, round, big and sweet qualities and produced exclusively in Fukuoka prefecture.
The jelly is a translucent red-brown colour with a fragrant, sweet strawberry aroma that came through with a bright and natural flavour – perfectly balanced in sweetness and acidity – that recalled plump red strawberries at peak ripeness.
The Melon Jelly comes in a green-teal coloured pouch and contained 7% melon juice. The melons used are from muskmelons, the most expensive fruit sold in Japan.
The jelly is a translucent off-white colour with a sweet honeydew aroma that recalled the fresh fruit at peak ripeness. The same bright flavour came through on tasting with a pronounced sweetness – almost too sweet – that developed with an equally prominent acidity in the body. The rich flavour was true to the luxuriousness of the real fruit.
This Orihiro Purunto Konnyaku Jelly Strawberry + Melon contained 12 pieces each of 20 g (6 x strawberry and 6 x melon). It was produced in Japan and purchased in Ōsaka, Japan in 2018.
