This Akagi Garigari-kun Ume was initially introduced in 2021 as part of the celebration of Garigari-kun’s 40th anniversary. In the autumn of 2020, fans of the product contributed to the flavour selection through an online survey, imagining the flavours Garigari-kun himself would enjoy. The popularity of the ume (Japanese plum) flavour led to its return as a seasonal offering in subsequent years.
Comprising 2% ume juice, the popsicle featured a crisp outer layer that enveloped an ume-flavoured shaved ice core. The photo above displays two-thirds of the popsicle, as the upper portion had broken within the packaging—a circumstance it shared with the grapefruit variant from the same line. Upon tasting, the ume flavour emerged with freshness, characterized by vibrant tart notes that harmoniously mingled with a subtle sweetness. The textural element of the crunchy shaved ice centre accentuated the overall refreshment provided by the popsicle. Among the various Garigari-kun popsicle flavours experienced so far, this ume iteration stood out as our favourite, making it a definite contender for repurchase.
