Nestlé KitKat Shinshu Apple is a limited edition for the Nagano (traditionally called Shinshu) region in central Japan, which is known for its red apples amongst other things. This is another flavour that was purchased from within the region (rather than Tōkyō Station), specifically during a day trip to Takayama.
The Nestlé KitKat Shinshu Apple is an apple flavoured cream sandwiched between wafers, then enrobed in apple-flavoured dark chocolate.
Straight from the packaging, the KitKat smells of apple and chocolate. Upon tasting, the crisp notes of sweet apple emerge as the dark chocolate melts to a rich creaminess with even brighter, juicy notes of apple emerging as you reach the sandwiching cream. The darkness of the chocolate counters the sweetness of the apples beautifully and lingered on the palate, all the while avoiding the typical faux alcoholic notes that often came through when fruit is used in chocolate. Indeed, this is the most enjoyable fruit-flavoured chocolate I’ve had yet.
The box of Nestlé KitKat Shinshu Apple contained 12 mini bars. It is a limited edition for the region of Nagano (Shinshu being its traditional name) and manufactured in Japan and was purchased in Takayama, Nagano, Japan in 2014.
