Duck has been one of my favourite meats even as a child. In particular, roast duck from Chinese barbeque shops is fragrant and juicy throughout without the dry breast of their soya chickens. So, when D and I spotted these Smith’s Chinese Peking Duck in the weekly catalogue, it was only a matter of when to try it.
Five spice and star anise make up the characteristic flavours of Peking duck for me. They both came through strongly in the aroma of these chips, which are dusted in orange coloured seasoning.
Upon tasting, these same fragrant flavours leave me in no doubt that these were Peking duck flavoured chips, although D is still unconvinced. The five spice and star anise came through at the head of each bite before intense meaty duck flavours develop in the body with strong savoury notes that are finished with a light hint of acidity. By the end of each bite, the Peking duck flavour recedes and the taste of potato comes dominates.
