Cadbury Old Gold Dark Chocolate Breakaway

This is the Cadbury Old Gold Dark Chocolate Breakaway.

The bar is divided into 12 rectangles much like the shape of the original Breakaway and consisted of layers of wafer and creme and a creamy milk chocolate centre covered in dark chocolate.

The chocolate bar has a rich dark chocolate aroma that also came through at the head of each bite before reaching the crispness of the wafer. As the bite melts, the milk chocolate creme brought a smooth and cooling sweetness to the bite that contrasts with the light crispiness of the wafer and the bolder dark chocolate notes, which return in the finish and linger in the aftertaste. Overall, the sweetness — coming from both the milk and dark chocolate — is too pronounced, although it does counter every bit of the typical bitterness one would expect from the dark chocolate.

This particular combination of wafers and chocolate does not compare to the satisfaction that comes from the creamier chocolate and crunchier wafers of Nestlé KitKats, and as the ‘premium’ brand for Cadbury, lacked the refined, creamy mouthfeel of Whittaker’s.

This Cadbury Old Gold Dark Chocolate Breakaway contained 180 g. It was produced in Australia and purchased in Sydney, Australia in 2021.
