Pureral is a portmanteau of ‘pure’ and ‘natural’ and while the branding of these gummy now has ‘Pure & Natural’ rather than ‘Pureral’ printed on them, their website still refers to them by this Japanese name, so here with have Kabaya Pureral Gumi Kiwi.

Each gummy is 1.5 x 1.5 x 1 cm, with the light green sections described as a soft gummy while the clear sections are described as a jiggly gummy. The kiwi flavour comes from fruit juice from kiwifruit grown in New Zealand.

The gummies have a vibrant aroma that captured the sweet acidity of a ripe kiwifruit. Upon tasting, the light green sections are soft with a fluffy, marshmallow texture and the tart kiwifruit flavour suggested by the aroma. As the bite reaches the clear, jiggly gummy, though, there’s a contrasting mouthfeel with its firmer, non-chewy agar jelly texture that brought the sweeter notes of a ripe kiwifruit to counter the prominent acidity of the marshmallow. The overall mouthfeel recalled the sensation of eating a fresh kiwifruit where the green coloured flesh delivered a softer texture (here, the lighter marshmallow section) compared to the sweeter and firmer white centre (here, the darker jiggly section). We’re fans.

This Kabaya Pureral Gumi Kiwi contained 45 g. It was produced in Japan and purchased in Nagasaki, Japan in 2019.
