Koikeya Pride Potato Gold Style No Salt Ebi

This is the Koikeya Pride Potato Gold Style No Salt Ebi, seasoned with shrimp but without salt.

The chips ranged from 4 to 5.5 cm in diameter, with a vivid orange-red seasoning finely dusted across the surface and visible black flecks throughout. The aroma was intensely savoury, with a pronounced shrimp note reminiscent of Calbee’s Kappa Ebisen.

The chips were fried at three different temperatures to maximise their crunch, which was satisfying, though not quite as refined as the texture found in the Calbee Kataage line. The initial flavour delivered a sweet ebi note—bright and umami-forward. However, in the absence of salt to provide structure, the shrimp flavour receded by mid-bite, allowing the rich, earthy quality of the potato to take precedence. In the finish, the black pepper lifted the flavour profile, adding a subtle heat that lingered pleasantly. Although the ebi note did not carry through to the end, the overall flavour progression was considered and effective. For a salt-free product, the chips demonstrated impressive depth and textural sophistication.
