We enjoyed the modern flavours of cream daifuku during our trips to Japan so we’re excited to find these Minato Seika Soy Milk Cream Daifuku available in numerous flavours. The daifuku have a diameter of 5 cm and height of 2.5 cm, with the mochi surface having a silky smooth softness.

This is the Mango, which consisted of a soy milk cream centre surrounded by mango purée and a mochi exterior. The mochi was yellow in colour but not flavoured with mango. Rather the mango flavour came from the mango purée that delivered the bright flavour of the fruit with a prominent sweetness but lacked a balancing acidity to bring out the freshness of the fruit.

This is the Sesame, which consisted of a soy cream centre surrounded by an azuki paste flavoured with black sesame. The black sesame flavour was bold with a fragrant nuttiness that was well balanced by the gentle sweetness of the thick azuki base of the paste, which also provided a contrast to the smooth softness of the mochi and was loosened by the soy cream centre.

This is the Green Tea, which consisted of a soy cream centre surrounded by a white bean paste flavoured with matcha. The mochi was green with a hint of matcha flavour, but the majority of the matcha flavour came from the flavoured paste, which captured the vegetal notes of the matcha with its usual hint of bitterness well restrained by the sweetness of the paste and the mellowing quality of the soy cream.

This is the Cafe au Lait, which consisted of a soy cream centre surrounded by a white bean paste flavoured with coffee. While the smell of coffee was subtle, it came through bright on tasting with an enjoyable depth that captured the roasted flavour of coffee with minimal bitterness but well-balanced sweetness. The lightness of the soy cream cut through the thickness of the paste and amplified the creamy aspect of a cafe au lait.
We thoroughly enjoyed the bright flavours, balanced sweetness and textures in these daifuku and would happily repurchase.
These Minato Seika Soy Milk Cream Daifuku each contained 60 g or 1 piece. They were produced in Japan and purchased in Sydney, Australia in 2022.
