Growing up in the 90s, McCain Pizza Pockets were a staple. Straight from the freezer and into the microwave for 90 seconds, these hot pockets of delicious oozy pizza innards were the perfect tasty and tidy after-school snack. Indeed, it was pizza pockets that introduced me to their inspiration: calzone. Indeed, Pizza Pockets aren’t nearly as popular as they used to be and it’s easier to find calzone in the fridge section with this Woolworths Hawaiian Calzone.

The calzone is prepared by baking in an oven at 180°C for 18 minutes.

They around 10 x 7 x 4 cm and in the traditional folded pizza shape, rather than the circular Pizza Pockets.

These calzone are filled with ham and pineapple in a tomato-based sauce. These have a more ‘homemade’ quality than Pizza Pockets with the ham being chopped up slices of thin leg ham from the deli rather than the uniform 3 mm strips often found on ham and pineapple pizzas. While the sauce lacked the punch from the herbs in a proper pizza sauce or the stretchy cheese in a Pizza Pocket, these hot pockets of goodness are tasty enough to have us return for more.
