This is the Ito En x Nippon Yell Miyazaki Hyūganatsu. Hyūganatsu, originating in Miyazaki Prefecture, is theorised to be a mutated yuzu or a chance hybrid between yuzu and pomelo. Following its discovery in the 1820s, it became widely cultivated in the region. The drink includes 1% hyūganatsu juice.

The beverage was a translucent off-white hue and offered a crisp and mellow aroma with sweet citrus notes and no carbonation. Upon tasting, the hyūganatsu took centre stage, introducing sweet floral tones that gradually developed a hint of sourness toward the end of the body. In the finish, a subtle zestiness emerged with a hint of bitterness, paving the way for a clean aftertaste.

The overall flavour profile did indeed resemble a blend of a less floral and less acidic yuzu, coupled with the crisper and lighter sweetness reminiscent of a pomelo. The absence of carbonation imparted a lemonade-like mouthfeel, yet notably, the beverage retained the distinct qualities of hyūganatsu, lacking the sharp acidic attributes associated with lemons. The surprisingly clean aftertaste added to the appeal, especially given the non-carbonated nature of the drink. In summary, this was a refreshing and invigorating beverage that paid homage to the unique characteristics of hyūganatsu.

This Ito En x Nippon Yell Miyazaki Hyūganatsu contained 500 mL. It was produced in Japan and purchased in Sydney, Australia in 2023.
