Asahi Mintia Shōnan Gold

This is the Asahi Mintia Shōnan Gold, made with powdered juice from Shōnan Gold, a hybrid Japanese citrus. This fruit is notable for its bright “golden” yellow colour, inherited from its mother plant, the small-sized Ōgonkan, and its enhanced size and traits from being crossed with the unshū mikan. Shōnan Gold is prized for its tender, succulent, and sweet pulp.

Each box contained 50 mints. The mints were circular, approximately 7 mm in diameter and 3 mm in height, with an opaque white appearance speckled with faint yellow flecks.

Upon opening, the zesty and slightly tropical fragrance of Shōnan Gold immediately emerged. On tasting, the distinct flavour of Shōnan Gold was apparent, offering a well-balanced blend of sweetness and acidity. As the mint dissolved on the tongue, it delivered a bright, sweet citrus flavour with subtle floral notes, reminiscent of the refreshing tartness and complexity of yuzu but without any bitterness. The delightful Shōnan Gold flavour persisted throughout, before fading cleanly, leaving no residual bitterness from artificial sweeteners.

Overall, these mints captured the essence of Shōnan Gold with impressive flavour duration and served their purpose as effective breath fresheners. They are certainly worth repurchasing.

This Asahi Mintia Shōnan Gold contained 7 g or 50 pieces. It was produced in Japan and purchased in Sydney, Australia in 2024.
