Tirol Choco Shio Daifuku

This Tirol Choco Shio Daifuku is a chocolate take on the daifuku variant that swaps out the sweetened anko filling for an unsweetened anko filling that gave it a mild salty taste.

Each bag contained 7 pieces wrapped individually in a blue and white wrapper.

Each piece is 2 x 2 x 1 cm with a pink coloured base of salted azuki flavoured chocolate with a white coloured top of salted vanilla chocolate and a mochi gummy centre.

The chocolate has a mellow sweet aroma of azuki despite being shio daifuku flavoured. Biting through the chocolate, though, the salty notes are indeed more prominent than any sweetness. As the teeth reach the mochi centre, though, a sweetness developed to recall the naturally sweet nuttiness of azuki. As its chewed, the mochi centre incorporates the vanilla and azuki chocolate as they melt, to prolong the flavours and add a satisfying chewiness. In the finish, the sweetness of the mochi overwhelms the saltiness of the chocolates and leaves a sweet azuki aftertaste lingering pleasantly. Overall, the choco is an interesting flavour with a good balance between the saltiness of the shio daifuku and the sweetness of the chocolate.

This Tirol Choco Shio Daifuku contained 7 pieces. It was produced in Japan and purchased in Tōkyō, Japan in 2018.
