Koomi Red Ninja Dragon Fruit Yoghurt

With the steady queues outside Yomie Rice Yoghurt even into autumn, I headed to the more newly opened Koomi to satisfy my curiosity about the yoghurt drink trend.

There’s still an impressive queue outside Koomi, but it does have the cutest cow mascot.

This is the Red Ninja Dragon Fruit Yoghurt ($6.80).

The drink was a translucent off white colour with a bright red-pink fruit pulp added at the end. The fruit pulp is vibrant shortly on receiving the drink and quickly settles to the base of the cup with a soft pink colour. Served chilled (but without ice) and shaken, the drink had a neutral yoghurt aroma without acidity or sweetness.

Upon tasting, though, the drink tastes exactly like a banana milkshake with a prominent acidity. The reason a ‘dragronfruit’ beverage tastes like banana lies in the mashed banana that bulks up the dragronfruit fruit pulp. The banana bits are soft and mushy while the dragonfruit bits have a crisper mouthfeel. The drink had a thick and creamy mouthfeel, much like a milkshake and less like pot yoghurt, and goes up the straw with ease.

I feel rather misled by absence of ‘banana’ in the drinks’ description as it’s the dominant flavour and as it is, is without any of the fresh nuttiness that defines the dragonfruit’s flavour. I’m in no hurry to return but I would enjoy trying a more conventional flavour such as the purple rice.

Red Ninja Dragon Fruit Yoghurt was purchased at Koomi located at 404 Sussex St, Haymarket NSW 2000 in April 2019.
