Calbee Jagabee Anchovy Potato Gratin

This is the Calbee Jagabee Anchovy Potato Gratin, a Moomin-themed release inspired by the Swedish dish Janssons frestelse, featuring potato, cream, and anchovy elements.

Each box contained five individually sealed packs, each printed with a different Moomin illustration.

The pieces presented as thick-cut sticks, approximately 0.8 × 0.8 cm in cross-section and varying from 2 to 8 cm in length. They showed a pale yellow colour with a light dusting of fine seasoning powder. Aroma opened with a warm, savoury profile combining potato and a mild cheesy note.

Initial contact delivered an immediate savoury hit. The structure fractured with a firm, continuous crunch, holding crispness throughout. Through the mid-palate, a creamy, cheese-like richness developed, supported by an underlying umami depth that suggested anchovy without becoming overtly fish-forward. A slight sweetness emerged within the body, rounding the profile. The potato base acted as a stable carrier, reinforcing the flavour system in a way that echoed the layered richness of the original gratin. The overall impression aligned loosely with a sour cream and onion profile, but with a deeper, more savoury-leaning umami character. Towards the finish, the savoury and creamy elements tapered cleanly, without oil build-up or residue. Aftertaste carried a mild lingering umami. Texture remained consistently crisp and dry, with sustained crunch and no detectable oiliness.

Overall, a thick-cut potato stick snack with a creamy, umami-driven seasoning and sustained crunch, resulting in a clean and well-integrated savoury profile.

This Calbee Jagabee Anchovy Potato Gratin contained 65 g (15 g x 5 packs). It was produced in Japan and purchased in Sydney, Australia in 2025.
