This is the Godiva 2021 Mid-Autumn Festival Mooncakes Gift Box.

Each box contained four individually sealed mooncakes:

  1. Lychee Oolong Tea White Chocolate Mooncake
  2. Matcha Kumquat White Chocolate Mooncake
  3. Raspberry & Rose Flavour White Chocolate Mooncake
  4. Passion Fruit Hazelnut Milk Chocolate Mooncake

Lychee Oolong Tea White Chocolate Mooncake. This mooncake consisted of an unflavoured tart shell filled with white chocolate, infused with smoked oolong tea powder (1.6%) and oolong tea flavour (0.1%), with a centre of lychee jam made from 42% lychee purée.

It had a bold, smoky aroma reminiscent of azuki and houjicha KitKats. The white chocolate disc added a satisfying crispness that complemented the crunchy tart base and contrasted with the creamy filling. The oolong tea imparted a smoky richness that lingered with each bite, while the lychee centre introduced a fruity acidity that cut through the creaminess. When eaten whole, the smoky oolong held its own against the velvety richness of the white chocolate, though it slightly overpowered the lychee’s floral notes, which were more noticeable when tasted separately.

Matcha Kumquat White Chocolate Mooncake. This mooncake had a matcha-flavoured tart shell filled with white chocolate infused with matcha (1.6%) and a centre of orange jam made from orange purée, mandarin, yuzu, and candied kumquat (4%).

With a sweet matcha aroma similar to matcha KitKats, the white chocolate disc provided a crisp texture that contrasted with the tart shell’s crunchy crumb. The white chocolate melted into a velvety sweetness, balancing the brisk, vegetal notes of the matcha filling. The orange jam brought a refreshing acidity, and the candied kumquat offered chewy bursts of sharpness and bitterness. The balance of fruity and rich chocolate flavours made this mooncake stand out, with the fruit component maintaining its presence against the creaminess of the chocolate.

Raspberry & Rose Flavour White Chocolate Mooncake. This mooncake featured an unflavoured tart shell filled with white chocolate flavoured with rose (0.2%) and a centre of raspberry paste (42%) atop crushed roasted almonds.

It had a fragrant rose aroma reminiscent of rosewater. Upon tasting, the white chocolate disc crisply broke apart, and the tart shell delivered a fine, crunchy crumb. The rose flavour spread smoothly as the white chocolate melted, while the raspberry paste added a subtle fruity acidity that was somewhat overshadowed by the strong rose flavour. The crushed almonds provided a nutty crunch, with lingering floral notes of rose throughout the bite.

Passion Fruit Hazelnut Milk Chocolate Mooncake. This mooncake consisted of a chocolate-flavoured tart shell filled with milk chocolate flavoured with hazelnut paste (97% roasted hazelnut), with a centre of passionfruit paste (42% passionfruit purée) atop a bed of crushed hazelnuts (83%).

It had a rich chocolate hazelnut aroma, reminiscent of Ferrero Rocher. The milk chocolate disc broke crisply, revealing a rich, smooth filling, while the tart shell provided a lighter crunch. The passionfruit centre delivered a sharp acidity that developed as the chocolate’s richness faded, revealing tart tropical notes. The roasted hazelnuts added a satisfying crunch to finish each bite.

Overall, these mooncakes from Godiva were delightful. Though expensive, the quality of the chocolate shone through, offering a refreshing change from traditional lotus paste mooncakes and a welcome indulgence during Sydney’s extended lockdown.
