The Global Osmanthus Oolong Pastry

This is The Global Osmanthus Oolong Pastry.

Each box contained two individually sealed pastries, each measuring approximately 4.5 cm in diameter. However, they looked noticeably different from the illustration on the packaging.

The pastries consisted of a brown centre of oosmanthus filling (21%), encased in a white mochi-like layer, followed by a layer of pea paste (21%), and wrapped in a brown hued unleavened pastry. It contained 5% oolong tea sauce. However, they looked noticeably different from the illustration on the packaging.

The flaky pastry had a mild margarine aroma and taste. Beneath it was a thick, dry pea paste that seemed to contribute more to texture than flavour, as it lacked any osmanthus oolong notes. Under the pea paste, a soft, stretchy glutinous rice layer encased the sugar paste, which offered a bold osmanthus oolong flavour, with floral apricot notes and a sweet, toasty oolong finish. However, when eaten together, the substantial amount of pastry, pea paste, and mochi dulled the osmanthus flavour, which could have been more pronounced.

Despite this, the pastry’s intricate layers and textures were impressive for the price ($2.00.59 for two) and made it worth repurchasing, although the bolder flavour of the jasmine longjing variety remains our preference.

This The Global Osmanthus Oolong Pastry contained 80 g (2 pieces). It was produced in China and purchased in Sydney, Australia in 2024.
