Calbee Jagabee Shiawase Butter

This is the Calbee Jagabee Shiawase Butter, a snack made by frying whole, natural-cut potatoes. This ‘shiawase butter’ or ‘happiness butter’ flavour combines the sweet and savoury taste of butter, honey, mascarpone, and parsley.

Each box contained sealed portions of 15 g and is illustrated with the brand’s mascot alongside a positive phrase, such as “ōenshiteru yo” or “itsumo arigatō.”

Each chip had a golden light brown hue with green flecks, about 0.8 cm thick, with irregular lengths and some visible potato skins. They gave off a sweet, tangy aroma reminiscent of cheese or fermented butter. On tasting, the chips had a firm, crispy texture, similar to a crunchy french fry. The mild sweetness of honey and creamy mascarpone came through at the start of each bite, followed by a rich buttery flavour and the deep taste of potato, finishing with a melt-in-the-mouth savoury note. This combination vividly evoked the taste of roast potatoes with melting butter, honey, and cream. While enjoyable, we preferred the light salt and soy butter flavours in the lineup.

This Calbee Jagabee Happiness Butter contained 15 g x 5 packs. It was produced in Japan and purchased in Sydney, Australia in 2024.
