Seika Foods Hyoroku Mochi

This Seika Foods Hyoroku Mochi is a sister brand of Bontan Ame and another type of flavoured gyūhi mochi confectionery. It’s flavoured with nori, matcha, kinako and shiroan.

Each piece of candy is 2 x 2 x 1 cm in size and opaque brown-green colour. The candy is soft to touch and wrapped in an edible outer layer of rice paper. Upon tasting, the rice paper dissolves on contact without any flavour before a gently sweet matcha flavour came through ahead of a savoury hit from the nori that balances the following earthy sweetness as the kinako notes emerged in the finish. The overall flavour was quintessentially Japanese yet accessible. The candy has a soft, chewy texture that’s firmer than usual mochi with a more addictive bounciness than a caramel, although it does stick to the teeth somewhat.

This Seika Foods Hyoroku Mochi contained 20 g or 4 pieces. It was produced in Japan and purchased in Kagoshima in 2019.
