I’d long been told that Sergio’s Cake Shop made tasty cakes, but was never overly impressed by the appearance of the cakes in the window to indulge. (Yes, looks matter when it comes to cakes!). But that isn’t to say their cakes aren’t neat and well made – they are – I’m just picky. A family outing to the cafe seemed a good a time as any to try their cakes out.

I had the lemon meringue tart. Lemon curd is one of my weaknesses, and anything with it is my go to dessert (even more so than chocolate). The meringue was beautifully piped and torched. The tart base was very thin (the way I like it) and coated in chocolate chocolate to prevent it from becoming soggy. The innards, however, were wanting. There was far too much meringue to lemon curd, which left the tart too sweet without the usual tanginess of the lemon curd to balance it out. I’d also have liked the meringue to be a tad stiffer.
For the same price, the lemon meringue tart at Autolyse hits all the right notes.
