Kura Kura Onigiri, Haymarket

A year ago, Kura Kura began offering onigiri, bento boxes, and affordable rice bowls during weekday lunchtimes from a small stand near the restaurant’s entrance.

Unagi ($5.00)

This onigiri was impressively delicious and substantial, with a thickness of 5 cm. It featured a sizeable piece of eel on top, along with more shredded unagi mixed within, all accompanied by the usual sweet-savory sauce typical of kabayaki-style unagi. The rice grains were distinct and well-coated in the sauce, held together by seaweed that, while not crisp, added an extra layer of umami. It was so good, that it was near-inhaled, and repurchased numerous times.

Salmon & Seaweed ($5.00)

This onigiri was similarly substantial, with salmon flakes and wakame evenly mixed into the rice. The balance of salty protein from the tender salmon flakes (not overcooked to a squeaky texture) and the softer seaweed was spot on. The rice grains were perfectly cooked, distinct yet held together flawlessly by the roasted seaweed, adding an extra layer of umami.

Ramen ($5.00)

This onigiri was a unique take on tan tan men ramen, not seen elsewhere in Sydney. It featured savoury seasoned rice mixed with spicy pork mince, sesame seeds, bamboo shoots, naruto fish cake, and shallots. It was topped with half a golden ajitama and wrapped in nori. The result was a hearty, flavourful onigiri with excellent texture and slightly different flavours in each bite, making it well worth repurchasing.

As long-time fans of this casual yet authentic and affordable eatery, we appreciated this new option, which provided the perfect way to enjoy tasty Japanese fare without the need to dine in.
