We picked up this UHA Mikakutō Puccho Kumamoto Salt Watermelon from Kumamoto on a recent trip. It uses purée from watermelon grown in Kumamoto Prefecture, which is known for producing the highest quality watermelons in Japan.

Each stick consisted of 10 individually wrapped pieces of candy, which are a green-yellow colour around an opaque red centre with opaque balls of red coloured gummy hidden within. Upon tasting, the candy is very chewy with firm resistance to the teeth that softens on chewing to give way to a watermelon flavour with a bright sweetness before a gentle acidity from the much firmer gummies finishes the chew. As for the salt component, salt is often eaten with watermelon to amplify the sweetness of the fruit by suppressing traces of bitterness. So, the gummy does not taste savoury at all. Overall, the flavour was more natural than the artificial qualities of most other watermelon flavoured candy.
