Makkee Dessert, Sydney

This is Makkee Dessert, a dessert shop specialising in Chinese desserts, which we had not previously visited as its taro-based offerings were not of interest to us. We visited during the mango summer season.

Mango Pomelo Sago ($17.90)

This was served cold, with a mango, coconut milk and milk base topped with diced mango, red pomelo and sago. Once mixed, the base had a thick, creamy mouthfeel while remaining refreshing and light without feeling heavy. The mango chunks were ripe but retained their structure, providing a firm contrast to the creamy base. At around 3 cm cubed, however, they could have been cut smaller for easier eating by the mouthful without needing to bite through the pieces. The pomelo provided pops of floral citrus acidity, although the portion could have been more generous. Compared with the version from Lulu Dessert, which had a more generous portion of red pomelo alongside white pomelo for greater flavour dimension, Makkee’s pomelo component was less prominent. However, Lulu’s mango base was runnier, whereas Makkee’s thicker consistency provided a creamier mouthfeel. The sago at the base was plentiful, and its larger size complemented the relatively large mango pieces. The flavours were well balanced, with good ingredient quality throughout. Tasty, and one I would reorder.

Overall, a Chinese dessert shop offering a balance of creamy fruit-based desserts and contrasting textures, with the Mango Pomelo Sago strongest in its ripe mango and thick, creamy base, although the pomelo portion was less generous than Lulu Dessert’s.
