Sushi train seems to be my latest way of eating sushi. This time it was for a snack at Sushi Hon in Westfield, Sydney. I found out afterwards, that Sushi Hon boasts the longest sushi train in the southern hemisphere. I don’t recall thinking the sushi train was particularly long, though. In fact, I recall seeing the same dish pass me quite often. There are so many dishes on a sushi train, you’d wonder how I knew the same dish came past me, no?

You see, the skipper nigiri was the first plate we tried. I know it’s skipper because it sat squarely next to a sign saying as much on the train. We were on the outlook for plain fish on rice because that’s how we like our sushi – no mayonnaise or onion or pre-drizzled with sauce etc.

And the only other plain fish on rice was the plate on the right, which was not placed next to the skipper sign even though we thought it looked a lot like the skipper nigiri. We consulted the colour menu and saw that skipper and king fish nigiri do look deceptively similar, so we watched the king fish nigiri go around the train some 2-3 times in the span of at most 10-12 minutes, each time staring at it intently, before deciding it was not skipper nigiri. We were right!

After that, we gave up on finding raw fish on rice, and settled for the eel nigiri.

And to finish off, a sashimi plate. Sushi Hon is a rather expensive sushi train, but I was satisfied with the quality and taste of the food – I’d been cautious previously because they’re situated right beneath a glass ceiling, but it doesn’t seem to affect the food other than flood the place with natural light.
Sushi Hon is located at Level 5, Westfield Pitt Street Mall, 188 Pitt Street, Sydney NSW 2000.
