I have a terrible weakness for the umami-rich flavour of ripe tomatoes and tomato-based sauces. It’s a major drawcard for me in a dish and explains the comfort I find in simple foods like bruschetta, spaghetti bolognese and lasagna as well as tomato sauce. This here is Smith’s Crinkle Cut Heinz Tomato Ketchup and uses the crinkle-cut shape of potato chips as a delicious carby vehicle for the tangy-sweet tomato sauce.
These chips have a balanced sweetness without too much acidity or saltiness that remind of Heinz’s tomato ketchup both in smell and taste. If you’re a fan of dipping French fries into Heinz’s tomato ketchup then you’re sure to be a fan of these. After all, what’s not to love when it’s just the potato that’s changed its format into an ultra crispy crinkle cut?
D and I are firm fans of this flavour and we’re sad that it’s a limited edition flavour that only comes around every few years. These contain 20 g less than the chips in the regular flavours but they’re seriously delicious chips – we could easily finish the bag in one sitting.
