Many shops along Broadway offering Vietnamese pork rolls, but I always get mine from Little Devil Cakes & Bakery in Glebe. I have no particular reason other than it being where I visited many years ago for my pork roll fix as a university student. I’m a creature of habit – I’ve yet to even try the other shops, but this place has never made a fuss about my requests for extra coriander.
Their Pork Roll ($5.50) comes with the standard trimmings with a spread of butter/mayonnaise and pork liver pate, topped with slices of pork and cha lua, cucumber, pickled and julienned carrot, coriander, and a drizzle of soy sauce. They also offer spring onion, onion and chilli.
The ingredients are always fresh – the cucumber is crisp, the carrot is pickled and crunchy, while the cilantro is lush. The bread roll is always crunchy on the outside with soft innards. Some bakeries, like Lim’s Hot Bread in Eastwood, are more generous with the meat, but overall, the pork roll from Little Devil Cakes & Bakery is decent and tasty so I’ve never felt the need to branch out. Perhaps I’m missing out on something great?
