Chin Chin Ai Yu Jelly

Chilled grass jelly and green ai yu jelly in sugar syrup are a refreshing way to cool off during summer. While we’re fond of those two types of jellies having grown up with them, we’d not tried this similarly non-green ai yu jelly before.

Ai yu jelly made from the gel from the seeds of the awkeotsang creeping fig found in Taiwan and East Asian countries of the same climates and latitudes. This here is Chin Chin Ai Yu Jelly.

The jelly is a translucent straw colour with a mellow sweet aroma. Served chilled on its own, the jelly has a firm jelly texture. The flavour was mild — almost bland — with a subtle hint of lemongrass in the taste and without a natural sweetness. We’re not a fan of the flavour, so we’re not fond of this original ai yu jelly. That said, it loses that spicy herbal quality once served in sugar syrup, leaving a jelly with a good bouncy texture.

This Chin Chin Ai Yu Jelly contained 540 g. It was produced in Taiwan and purchased in Sydney, Australia in 2018.
