Supermarkets are fascinating places to visit when overseas. There are unfamiliar products from unfamiliar brands, unfamiliar products from familiar brands, as well as familiar products from unfamiliar brands. One of the supermarkets we visit on every trip to Ōsaka (and hence, so far, Japan) is the Life in Namba where we picked up this Tarami Mikan Jelly.
Peeled and deseeded mandarin segments pack the tub, while the jelly is clear and unflavoured.
The generous number of segments suspended throughout the tub means that each spoonful has at least one and each segment is plump and juicy, bringing prominent pops of fresh, sweet mandarin flavour and texture despite the unflavoured jelly base. The jelly is set using agar, yet has an enjoyably smooth and slight bounce that holds the segments together well without crumbling as is typical of agar set jellies.
This tub of Tarami Mikan Jelly contained 200 g. It was produced in Japan and purchased in Ōsaka, Japan in 2018.
