Not entirely satisfied with the S&B Hayashi Torokeru despite enjoying its strong tomato flavour, we try this S&B Golden Hayashi Rice Sauce. We enjoy S&B Golden Curry so at almost twice the price, we were curious to try this ‘delicious hayasi rice sauce mix filled with rich flavour of tomatoes, herbs and spices’.
As with all these boxes of sauce, it comes with two individually sealed bricks of roux.
The roux is a dark brown colour with a rich aroma of herb and spice. It recommends using 600 mL of water to each brick.
We were expecting a rich tomato sauce but were surprised by the strong flavour of masala – recalling star anise or Chinese five spice generally – in the sauce brought a slightly sharp and moderate bitterness that overwhelmed the sweetness we expect from the tomato and onion base of the sauce. While we usually use a bit less (~2.5 cups) when cooking in a pressure cooker, perhaps roux is the exception and would benefit from more water to mellow the flavour.
This S&B Golden Hayashi Rice Sauce contained 193 g. It was produced in Japan and purchased in Sydney, Australia in 2017.
