While in Nagoya last year, I found this regional Nestlé KitKat Azuki Sandwichthat’s inspired by ogura toast, a delicacy from the Chukyo area (around Nagoya) where azuki (sweet red bean) paste is spread on thickly-sliced buttered toast. I didn’t try proper ogura toast, but I did try a yummy version with azuki paste spread on a fluffy buttered flapjack.
The KitKat version is an azuki-flavoured cream sandwiched between wafers, then covered in azuki-infused dark chocolate.
This KitKat has convinced that azuki and chocolate is a match made in heaven. Notes azuki and dark chocolate are apparent on opening, and this translates to a sweet azuki flavour in the head that’s evenly balanced by the dark chocolate. As the chocolate melts, nutty notes – recalling a pleasantly nutty butter on toast – emerged in the body with heightened notes of fragrant azuki from the cream between the wafers, which linger on the palate with the dark chocolate. These were my favourite flavour of KitKats from Japan to date.
The box of Nestlé KitKat Azuki Sandwich contained 12 mini bars. It is a limited edition for the region of Chukyo and produced in Japan and was purchased in Nagoya, Japan in 2014.
