Meiji Milk Chocolate holds almost a quarter of the market share for chocolate in Japan. That’s no small feat considering the extensive variety available. Since its introduction in 1926, the production process and flavour has remained largely unchanged. So with the chocolate bar facade of the Meiji Factory outside Ōsaka a reminder every time we passed by, we decided to try it out for ourselves.

Each bar consisted of 15 rectangular blocks that break off cleanly.

A pleasant mellow aroma of cocoa from the bar also came through in the taste: the cocoa flavour was strong yet mellow, as the chocolate melts to a smooth and creamy consistency without the slight hint of grit. A light cocoa flavour lingered on briefly palate, but the aftertaste feels clean. Overall, it’s an incredibly enjoyable chocolate bar: it’s mellow and comforting, yet flavourful. It’s a simple chocolate bar executed impeccably.
This bar of Meiji Milk Chocolate contained 50 g. It was produced in Japan and purchased in Ōsaka, Japan in 2018.
