Snag Stand, Sydney

Hot dogs are a quintessential street food. Something that’s cheap, quick and tasty, but usually nothing that blows your mind. The Snag Stand seeks to do just that with their ‘haute dogs’.

This is the Chicken & Rocket Haute Dog ($9.90), ‘freshly grilled and served on a soft poppy seed roll with fresh herb aioli, fresh tomatoes and shaved parmesan’.

I’ve had this hot dog a few times before, and this time, the chicken sausage had cheese oozing out of middle – that’s new! The bun was soft and fluffy, and the sausage came out hot. This was an improvement on previous experiences with this hot dog where the sausage was almost cold. I keep coming back to this hot dog because the flavour combinations are right up my alley even though I’ve never been blown away by it, and this time I’ve realised why – the hot dog begs for a crunchy texture, which the diced tomatoes, rocket and soft bun do not provide. Give me something crunchy – even fresh lettuce – and it’d be one satisfying hot dog!

The chips (regular ($3.90) with truffle aioli ($1.00)) here used to be some of the best chips I’d had. They were crunchy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Alas, this time, the chips were quite salty, which wasn’t necessary given the dip for it. They chips also absorbed all the steam and became soft and floppy. Perhaps we’d let them sit for too long, but I don’t recall this being an issue on previous occasions – they stayed crunchy throughout the meal.

My impressions of the hot dog improved, although I was surprisingly disappointed by the chips. Hopefully, the chips were a one off occurrence.
