This Aunt Betty’s Steamy Puds Chocolate follows on from the sticky date pudding. I wasn’t sold on the sticky date pudding, which used xanthan gum, but I decided to give the rest of the range a go.
Part of the reason I try the rest of the range is because each serving is packaged individually, stored at room temperature and ready to eat after heating in a 1000W microwave for 30 seconds. So convenient!
This chocolate ‘pud’ is also self-saucing after it’s been released upside down after heating. The sponge is a deep brown colour, like a good mud cake, while the sauce is almost black.
The ‘pud’ has the chocolate aroma reminding one of cheap dark chocolate that attempts to balance the bitterness with excessive sweetness. Served hot and upside-down, the chocolate sauce soaks through the top quarter of the sponge before puddling down the sides. The sponge does a poor job of soaking up most of the sauce as it has the same odd, plasticky texture and flavour as the sticky date pudding rather than a soft eggy and buttery cake crumb.
Overall, the convenience of these ‘puds’ cannot overcome the cheap chocolate flavour and the plasticky cake texture.
