The Woolworths Pecan Danish used to be an occasional treat when I was growing up in the 90s. Then, I forgot about it as I grew up and it’s only on seeing it again in stores that I’ve noticed it’s appeared only sporadically in the bakery section at Woolworths for over a good decade.
The danish is ‘a pastry with a smooth and creamy [custard] filling (39%), topped with crunchy pecans (2%)’.
It’s about 20 cm in diameter and 10 cm in height in the middle.
The pastry has a sweet custard aroma and biting through, it’s light and fluffy with pockets of air on the inside with a golden brown crust drizzled with ribbons of icing. Light ribbons of cinnamon go through the pastry, giving an additional lightly spiced flavour, while the smooth and creamy custard pairs well with the lightness of the pastry. Overall, the sweetness of this pastry is well restrained by the unsweetened pastry.
