We’ve had our eye on this Herbert Adams Artisan Range Butter Chicken for months. They’re a small batch selection that are ‘lovingly hand finished’ and usually sold at a premium of $9.00 for a 2 pack — a price that challenges even freshly baked ones from the bakery — but we managed to get our hands on a box when they finally went on sale (for $7.50).

They’re described as being crafted ‘by cooking Australian chicken until tender in a flavourful butter chicken sauce, before wrap[ped] in delicious golden pastry and hand finish[ed] with a delicate sprinkling of black and white sesame seeds and dusting of turmeric’.
The pies contain 33% chicken, and (amongst other things) tomato cream, onions, tomato paste, real chicken stock, garlic, and spices. They’re prepared by baking in an oven preheated to 170°C fan forced for 40-50 minutes from frozen.

The dusting of turmeric give these pies an unmistakably ‘curry’ flavoured appearance to a delicious pie. The innards are filled with generous chunks of tender chicken breast that are covered in a fragrant and tangy tomato sauce that leaves us in no doubt that it’s a curry sauce with the sesame seeds adding an enjoyable nuttiness. While we’ve had sweeter and more buttery butter chicken at restaurants, this one is more restrained which D’s savoury palate prefers and I enjoy immensely.
This Herbert Adams Artisan Range Butter Chicken contained 440 g or 2 pies. It was produced in Australia and purchased in Sydney, Australia in 2019.
