This Tyrrell’s Smoky Texas BBQ was one of two new flavours released in mid 2019. They’re seasoned with a blend of ‘Texas BBQ seasoning’ including paprika, chilli, black pepper, tumeric, asafoetida, capsicum, allspice, celery, clove, coriander, fenugreek, ginger, lovage and nutmeg.
The crisps are thick cut with the seasoning giving them a bright orange colour with a barbeque sauce aroma. Upon tasting, the crisps have a prominent sweetness before a fragrant hit of the spices came through and develop a gentle tingling sensation from the heat of the spices on subsequent crisps. Overall, the flavour recalled a very sweet — almost too sweet — smoky BBQ sauce, that is, a tomato sauce base seasoned with a generous heaping of spices to recall the caramelised crust on a low and slow cooked piece of meat.
