Hey Sweetie Bakery has been around for as long as we can remember. Back in high school before the advent of smart phones that now allow us to make video and audio calls over WiFi, D and I knew the bakery as a place to buy phone cards for calling overseas.
Fast forward to over a decade later, and the bakery is still there but without the dreaded PVC door curtain.
I’m immediately drawn to the Wife Cake ($2.00).
The wife cake is my favourite traditional Cantonese pastry, and here it delivered with a thin crust of flaky pastry surrounding a filling of candied winter melon, almond paste and sesame, and spiced with five spice powder. It’s not often that I find wife cake that ticks all the boxes, but here it does with a generous filling that retains some bite in the candied winter melon.
This is the Red Bean Cake ($2.00).
The red bean cake here seems to have a different pastry than than wife cake, which gave it more of a biscuit texture than a flaky lightness that gave a very dense and heavy mouthfeel when coupled with the thick red bean which has just enough sweetness.
This is the Egg Tart ($1.50). This one has a pie crust, while the egg custard delivered on the expected flavour and texture being smooth and not too sweet. We do missing the flaky and buttery pastry of usual egg tarts though.
With decent traditional baked goods, it’s obvious why Hey Sweetie has survived for so long despite the rise of bakeries chains.
