This Lychee Green tea with Honey Jelly ($8.80, fixed size, no ice, regular sweetness) was the second of the lychee-based drinks released by CoCo Fresh Tea & Juice in March 2021. The drink consisted of a green tea base with honey jelly and six deseeded lychees.
Consumed chilled, the green tea was mildly sweetened with a light toasty flavour and moderate astringency but otherwise not flavoured with lychee syrup. The honey jelly brought globs of bold sweetness with its melt-in-the-mouth smoothness that was bouncy without being chewy. While the initial impression of a sweet green tea with honey jelly was lacklustre, the lychees surpassed expectations on the lychee component of the drink. To our surprise, the six in our drink were large with a crisp, fleshy sweetness that recalled good quality fresh lychees — perhaps frozen — rather than the softer, overly sweet canned lychees to which we were accustomed. We’ve eaten fresh lychees that tasted much worse. Overall, this was a refreshing drink that celebrated the deliciousness of lychees in a green tea base without relying on syrup.
