Krispy Kreme Doughnuts announced this Doughnut Iced Latte Inspired by Original Glazed on the morning of April Fool’s Day in 2022, before following up in the evening to confirm that this was a real product available for purchase in-store. So of course, our curiosity was piqued and we secured our own a few days later.
The coffee was an opaque light brown colour with a bold aroma of oat milk and overly sweet maple. Consumed chilled, an initial bitterness from the coffee (and amplified by the artificial sweetener) came through before developing with a sweet maple and vanilla quality in the body that did little to mask the initial bitterness. This bitterness, along with the signature flavour of oat milk, persisted throughout the sip with the latter coming to prominence and lingering long in the finish.
The oat milk base delivered the baked doughnut notes to the coffee, and the vanilla and maple notes brought the ‘original glaze’ aspect for a successful rendition of the Original Glazed Doughnut. However, the overall flavour of the latte was overly bitter, sickeningly sweet and overwhelmingly oaty to be enjoyable.
