Rebel Donuts, Lane Cove

Victoria’s Rebel Donuts found its first home in NSW inside the new Harris Farm Markets store that opened in Lane Cove in early September 2022.

The classic doughnuts are $4.50 for one or $22.00 for six, while the specialty doughnuts are $5.50 each or $25.00 for six. The classic doughnuts are the unfilled, glazed and cinnamon doughnuts or the jam and Nutella-filled doughnuts.

The Cinna-Roo is a ‘hand-crafted rosette donut made and rolled in ‘their’ special cinna-roo pure Ceylon cinammon and sugar mix’.

This is the most basic of the doughnuts they have on offer. The doughnut had a subtle crispness with a soft and tender interior, while the dusting of sugar and cinnamon added a subtle sweetness. We’d prefer a stronger cinnamon flavour, and preferred The Real OG and Pineapple Ugly (below) for their touch more flavour.

The Real OG is their ‘original house Gangsta Glaze infused with pure Tongan vanilla bean’.

The vanilla glaze here had greater depth and more tender dough than the version at Krispy Kreme. We’re fans.

Pineapple Ugly is their ‘nostalgic pineapple glaze, infused with pure Tongan vanilla bean, on a delicious, light, fluffy donut’.

Pineapple Ugly is their ‘nostalgic pineapple glaze, infused with pure Tongan vanilla bean, on a delicious, light, fluffy donut’.

The doughnut was light, soft and fluffy with the crispness of the crust enhanced by the added crunch of the pineapple glaze, which delivered a gently tangy, tropical sweetness that brought us back to our childhood. It was a simple doughnut without the bells and whistles of the Pash Me (below) yet easily our favourite.

Betty B ‘brought to life the traditional Boston cream donut with [their] delicious vanilla bean custard and milk chocolate glaze’.

The doughnut was soft and fluffy with a lightly crisp base, while the interior custard had a restrained sweetness and rich and creamy vanilla flavour. It was thick, holding its shape without squeezing everywhere on each bite. The milk chocolate glaze countered the mellow sweetness of the custard, tasting refined with a bold chocolate flavour.

Mars Attacks is a ‘daring donut with an oozy caramel filled centre, milk chocolate glaze and chocolate shavings’.

This one is for fans of Mars Bars. The centre was intensely sweet and heavy, but thankfully, the relatively small dollop allowed the doughnut to provide some relief along with the milk chocolate glaze and chocolate shavings. The bitterness of darker chocolate would’ve likely cut through the richness of the caramel centre better.

Queen of Hearts is ‘filled with the finest jam and custard cream, elegantly topped with strawberries and a sugar dusting’.

The doughnut was light much like the previous doughnut and a very enjoyable take on strawberries and cream.  The rich fruitiness of the strawberry jam complemented the relative lightness and less sweet cream with the fresh slithers of strawberries adding a hint of acidity and freshness.

Lord Lamington is a ‘jam-filled donut, coated with chocolate glaze and coconut’.

The dusting of coconut over the chocolate with the jam centre was the perfect doughnut version for a lamington. We enjoyed the fine dusting of desiccated coconut and the thin coating of chocolate, which helped the strawberry jam centre shine. Overall, we prefer the lighter flavours of the previous strawberry doughnut.

Pash Me featured ‘passionfruit curd, custard cream and a dusting of sugar’.

The doughnut was soft and tender, with the smooth and rich custard cream complementing the tart passionfruit curd. Our penchant for tropical flavours sees us preferring this one over the Queen of Hearts.

We were pleasantly surprised by our thorough enjoyment of the doughnuts from Rebel Donuts. Their lightness and fluffiness, crisp exterior and tender interior, and elegant ‘speciality’ trimmings make them a step above the rest. They’re everything we’d hoped the now-forgotten Doughnut Time to be.

Rebel Donuts is located inside Harris Farm, 56-60 Burns Bay Rd, Lane Cove NSW 2066.
