Itohkyuemon is a long-established tea house in Uji, Kyōto, and one of two KitKat flavours they’ve created using their teas in collaboration with Nestlé Japan is Nestlé KitKat Itokyuemon Uji Maccha. This KitKat is distinct from the more widely available Otona no Amasa Uji Maccha KitKat, being a regional flavour available only in Kyōto – indeed, these were purchased from the tea house itself.

This KitKat consisted of fragrant wafers wrapped in a beautiful green coloured white chocolate flavoured with Itohkyuemon’s matcha that’s flecked with darker green specks of gyokuro.

The rich flavour of mellow matcha defines this KitKat. The first taste is sweet, yet as chocolate spreads throughout your mouth, the vegetal notes characteristic of Japanese green teas become more pronounced as the unsweetened – and intensely bitter – matcha cream sandwiching the wafers dissolves. Eaten together, it much like a deliciously thick and creamy (sweetened) matcha, with a slightly bitter lingering aftertaste.

Compared to the Otona no Amasa Uji Maccha (right), the colour of the Itokyuemon Uji Maccha (left) is a darker green and the matcha flavour was richer, and so leaves a brighter finish that’s mellowed by a sweeter white chocolate base. If Otona no Amasa Uji Maccha KitKat were a matcha latte made from one teaspoon of matcha, then Itokyuemon Uji Maccha is made from two.

And to finish is a photo of the box for the same flavour of KitKat from 2011 containing 2 full-size, rather than mini-size, bars.
The box of Nestlé KitKat Itokyuemon Uji Maccha contained 12 mini bars. It is a regional edition limited to Kyōto and was produced in Japan and purchased in Uji, Kyōto, Japan in 2015.
