Buttercrumbs Croissant opened their second store in Ultimo in mid-2022.
It’s situated opposite Broadway Shopping Centre.
Their full spread is available Wednesday to Sunday. One of every available pastry is on display in the glass cabinet next to the cashier.
Pretzel Croissant ($6.00). This was my first pastry from Buttercrumbs Croissant in 2021 and remains my favourite to this day. I’d not seen it on offer at their Five Dock location since that first time, so was thrilled to get my hands on it again at their Ultimo store. It was every bit as buttery and flaky and pretzel-y as I remembered.
Black Sesame Croissant ($9.00), a black sesame croissant filled with black sesame custard cream and topped with black sesame tuille.
Spotting this croissant on their social media as a limited edition flavour for Black Friday in November 2022, drew me to visit their Ultimo store despite it having been open for many months by then.
The croissant itself had a crisp outer shell with buttery layers within. While the pastry carried little black sesame flavour and likely achieved its colour from charcoal, the generous amount of custard cream delivered a bright and nutty black sesame flavour with a balanced sweetness, while the tuille added that extra element of crunch and bold black sesame flavour.
While their uncertain spread at their Five Dock store had left me somewhat jaded about Buttercrumbs Croissant, I’m delighted that their Ultimo store has redeemed the brand.
