This is the Xiǎng Duōduō Jiāoyán Tǔdòu Tiáo Tomato Flavour. They’re potato chips flavoured with tomato.
Each chip measured approximately 4 x 0.5 x 0.5 cm, featuring an extruded and ridged shape reminiscent of soya crisps. Coated in an orange seasoning, they emitted a sweet tomato aroma. Upon tasting, the potato chips provided a satisfying crunch, and the seasoning introduced an initial sweet tomato flavor with a hint of savoury undertones. However, the savoury notes diminished completely by mid-bite, leaving the sweetness to take over. The sweetness resembled that of a tomato sauce sweetened with sugar, lacking both acidity and savoury umami. Towards the end of some chips, a somewhat rich potato flavor emerged, while for others, the sweet taste persisted into the finish, preceding a clean aftertaste. Although we appreciated the texture of these chips, the overly sweet tomato flavor left us disappointed. This sweet characteristic is shared by Korean snacks, which might explain the packaging featuring Korean alongside the Chinese.
