Queen Sophie, renowned alongside Tai Cheong Bakery for crafting the finest egg tarts in Hong Kong, prompted our visit to their Sheung Wan store to try their offerings.
Queen Sophie specialised in puff pastry tarts, which boasted an impressive 366 layers. Alongside their signature egg tarts, they also sold milk egg tarts, Portugueese tarts, as well as ones flavoured with matcha, taro, and topped with various nuts.
Egg Tart (13 HKD/2.6 AUD). This tart was approximately 30% larger than the one offered by Tai Cheong Bakery, a difference reflected in the price. The promised flakiness of the pastry delivered, presenting a profound combination of buttery richness and caramelized sweetness. The custard filling, while silky smooth with a delightful eggy flavor that melted on the palate, exhibited more pronounced dairy notes. This preference for a balanced profile led us back to the perfected egg tart at Tai Cheong Bakery.
