Gelato Franco, Marrickville

Gelato Franco, established in 2015, is a traditional gelateria located in Marrickville, dedicated to crafting gelato from real and fresh ingredients.

Unlike many gelaterias in Sydney until recently, Gelato Franco has tables for guests to enjoy their ice cream.

Watermelon (Top): This flavour was a pale pink hue, with a vibrant sweetness and an intense watermelon flavour. On its own, the absence of acidity in the watermelon might have allowed the sweetness to become overpowering. For this reason, we prefer the version at Anita Gelato, where watermelon is paired with mint, successfully capturing the refreshing essence of enjoying watermelon on a scorching summer day.

White Peach and Lime (Base): This flavour was a beige colour and had a very subtle taste, with dewy notes of white peach and a mere hint of lime zest that did not introduce any acidity. Similar to the watermelon, this flavour benefitted from a complementary pairing to ‘refresh’ the palate. This allowed the subtlety of the flavour to persist, ensuring it maintained its delicate presence.

Passionfruit and Coconut. This flavour was a pale orange hue, with the passionfruit flavour vibrant with its distinctive tanginess balanced by a sweet undertone. The delightful texture, courtesy of the crunch of passionfruit seeds and the chewiness of dried coconut flakes, set it apart from the other two flavours. This unique textural element, without introducing additional flavour, made it our preferred choice among the three.

All the gelato exhibited a mastic-like, almost elastic quality akin to Hakiki Turkish Ice Cream. This characteristic provided a gelato that was easily scoopable with a slight gummy mouthfeel before swiftly melting to smoothness on the palate. Overall, we found the quality of the flavours to be satisfying and would be open to returning for additional varieties.

Gelato Franco is located at 281 Marrickville Rd, Marrickville NSW 2204.
