During our visit to Yamazaki Bakery, our initial curiosity about the Japanese influence on their breads shifted when we discovered their intriguing selection of porbiria.

A quick online search revealed that these pastries are more commonly known by the name pontikege (3.9 HKD/0.78 AUD each, 10.5 HKD/2.1 AUD for 3, 20 HKD/4 AUD for 6).

Measuring about 5 cm in diameter and 3 cm in height, the porbiria had a crispy bread-like exterior with a small peak at the top, resembling a meringue. Upon biting into it, we encountered a chewy, light mochi interior with a slight savoury note, enhanced by the presence of black sesame seeds that contributed an enjoyable nuttiness.
While the pontikege is a unique offering in Hong Kong, similar baked goods can be found in various cultures. The chewy sesame bread from Paris Baguette Cafe in South Korea bore close resemblance.

The store also carried a diverse selection of other intriguing breads, including a black sesame milk bread that piqued our interest.
Yamazaki Bakery is located at Shop 203, Ma On Shan Plaza, 608 Sai Sha Road, Ma On Shan, Hong Kong.
