This is the Black Swan Favourites Baba Ganoush. It contained 78% roasted eggplant. Additionally, it contained tahini and chickpeas, along with traditional ingredients like garlic, lemon juice, and spices. The incorporation of tahini aligned it more closely with the traditional baba ganoush recipe, in contrast to the ‘baked eggplant’ dips from Yumi’s and Aldi.
The dip had a pale tan hue with yellow and green specks, emitting a nutty and garlicky aroma. Upon tasting, the initial impression was of a fragrant garlic flavor, heightened by the inclusion of tahini, which accentuated the nuttiness of the dip compared to those from Aldi Deli Originals and Yumi’s Quality Foods as well as complemented the smoky notes in the roasted eggplant that came to prominence at the end of each bite. However, the smooth texture of the eggplant lacked the chunky texture typically associated with baba ganoush. The lemon juice added a pronounced acidity that was more mellow in the other brands while the addition of chickpeas resulted in a somewhat grainy mouthfeel, although it did improve the dip’s overall dippable texture.
While this dip offered a more authentic baba ganoush experience, we still prefer the simpler and smoother flavor profiles of Yumi’s and Aldi’s versions.
