Bakealicious by Gabriela, a small independent bakery in Forestville, has gained popularity as the preferred bakery for international pop stars like Ed Sheeran, Harry Styles, and Taylor Swift.
However, what caught our attention was online praise for their black forest cake being one of Sydney’s best.
Black Forest ($9.50/slice)
The cake had two layers of incredibly moist chocolate sponge, with a layer of buttercream frosting punctuated by a few sour cherries for a burst of fruity acidity. While the buttercream did offer a counterbalance to the richness of the chocolate, we found it a tad dense, lacking the desired textural contrast. Notably absent were the glace cherries on top and the use of cherry liqueur, which left us yearning for the signature brightness and richness provided by cherry liqueur in traditional Black Forest cakes.
Overall, while this cake delivered on chocolatey goodness with a hint of cherries, it fell short of the true Black Forest experience. For an authentic and consistently delightful Black Forest cake, Bakery Patisserie Schwarz takes the cake, with Flour Shop coming in as a close contender, albeit with some variability between slices.
